What is an erosion and sediment control plan?

Erosion and sediment controls are the structural and non-structural practices used during construction activities to keep sediment in place (erosion control) and to capture sediment that is moved by stormwater before it leaves the site (sediment control). An erosion and sediment controls plan, also known as a ESC or E&S plan, is a site-specific plan that details the location and schedule for the implementation of erosion and sediment controls designed to retain pollutants on-site to the extent practicable with consideration of local topography, soil type, and rainfall frequencies.

Construction activities like interior remodeling, which do not disturb the land, generally do not require an ESC plan.

The erosion and sediment control plan illustrates the location of the proposed erosion and sediment controls on-site and must be included in your Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP). While the SWPPP serves as a comprehensive compliance guide, detailing the project scope and objectives, the responsible operators, the potential sources of pollution on-site, and the Best Management Practices that will be utilized to contain them.
